Sebastian, on a headless machine like a server there is no DISPLAY set by default and none of the apps should require X or rely on some envvar manually set to upgrade.
anyway the patch seems to workaround the problem. I would prefer to see something that doesn't require X at all given that the warnings can be confusing to non techie-users.
