Now able to boot to a good Unity desktop. Installed unity-tweak-tool and ran unity-tweak-tool --reset-unity. It hung in a wait condition and would not complete. Decided to reboot and re-run the unity reset to document the hang condition. The boot completed to a good desktop (Unity launch bar and Ubuntu banner there).
