Looked at the description of 1357746 which indicates problem caused by the latest level of xserver-xorg-video-intel. The "boot hang on black screen" forum entry (see Ubuntu Development Version) I had with Gnome also involved the same component. In trying to debug the Gnome failure it was recommended to go to an earlier level of xserver-xorg-video- intel. The only way I knew to do this was to copy the executable files (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so, /usr/lib/libI810XvMC.so.1.0.0, and /usr/lib/libIntelXvMC.so.1.0.0) from my working 14.04 system to the failing 14.10 Gnome system. When I booded the modified 14.10 system it came up and ran with only a minor screen refresh slowness. Since this fixed the Gnome system I tried it on the Unity system but unless I did something wrong it made no difference. The interesting thing was when I backed off the changes in the Gnome system (replaced the 3 original modules) the system continued to boot OK without any screen refresh slowness.
