This is just to let you know that I have read this, but it is quite late
at night so I might not get it done tonight.
Hint 1: I removed the old partitions (each time) and replaced them with
a fresh, blank primary partition. When I tried "formatting" the
partition (e.g. as FAT32) the installer didn't even get past 15%. Now it
crashes at about 30%.

Hint 2: I think I tried that once and I'm not convinced it didn't crash
anyway. I will at least try that tonight, but I have to be at work in
the morning, so I shouldn't be up too late.

I will get this sorted in the next few days as I'm on holiday next week
:-)

Will do what I can as I really want to have Ubuntu on my external HD (and 
bootable from external HD too).
