Someone intimate with grub and kernel-loading has to chime in here. The only thing I can suggest is to try different versions of grub in order to isolate the issue. I built the old 0.97-20 Debian version, please try it. It has no Ubuntu patches like for instance for usplash support. It should tell us if Ubuntu is to blame or if it would be the same in Debian.
