All points here are well taken, and I will of course get used to the new
behavior.

That doesn't change the fact that that this was a large disruption to my
every day usage.  I realize I'm just complaining now, but it seems there
should be a mechanism in place to inform users of substantial under the
hood changes like this that are very likely to confuse average users
such as myself.  Yes, there is the ability to view changelogs, but those
are easy to pass over for standard updates.  Besides, if I looked at
every change log, many of which I can't understand anyway, that's all
I'd do.
