I think it could be interpreted both ways - regression or feature.  I
personally think it's a regression and should be patched, but I guess
we'll just have to wait and see.

As for another shell, "zsh" is similar to bash and is available in the
repos.  It has the old history behavior.  I'd also recommend checking
out ohmyzsh on github.  You'll need to Google it, as setting it up as
default takes some configuring and this isn't the place for a tutorial.
