Still have the problem. But it became clear after awhile that nvidia was not part of it. That was separate, an interaction between nvidia tools and gnome.
But the evolution hang is still there. My guess is that it hangs when being unsuccessful in accessing gnome keyring for the password in order to pole the mail server. Not sure what is configured wrong. It is successful often. But when this event happens, the evolution window frame still gets drawn, but the content is not there, usually just a slightly garbled version of whatever was in video memory before switching to that window. Trying to close the window with the windows button gives the "not responding" error message. It will sometimes close from that dialog. Other times I have to kill it. Sometimes the content of the error message window gets stale also. Then I definitely have to kill it to close it. I never lose data. Unfinished emails are always recovered. All it takes is a restart of Evolution and all is working again. The message bar at the bottom of the window usually has a throbber running (or stalled) as if it is trying to poll the server. That is one reason why it seems like perhaps it is just hanging when trying to get the password from gnome keyring. This is in 9.04. I installed the ubuntu studio package, if that changes anything. I think this is an upgrade from an 8.10 clean install. It was the same in 8.10. I have seen a bug report from 2007 or so that seems like it might be the same.
