Mike Sweet has answered already to the report. To make sure that the problem is really on the CUPS side, try the following:
Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf so that it has a line "FileDevice Yes", then restart CUPS with "sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart" and create a queue for your printer using the URI "file:/dev/usblp0" and the same PPD file as for your current print queue. This surrounds the USB backend.
