I tried to used the 'usb' binary provided by Till Kamppeter and I no longer have any problems. Great job on fixing the issue!
As for AlterEgo's comment on his USB storage which disconnects. I tried to hook up my iPod Shuffle via USB and turn my printer off and on to see if the iPod got disconnected, it didn't. I would like to mention that I have my printer connected directly to a USB port in my computer and not via any USB hub with other devices.
