Ok I had the though to try the above with the DVD Drive connected. I ran
lshal --monitor with the following result;

Start monitoring devicelist:
-------------------------------------------------
11:30:54.171: storage_model_RW_DVD_GCC_4522B property 
storage.removable.media_available = true
11:30:54.549: volume_part_1_size_384841728 added

11:31:30.706: storage_model_RW_DVD_GCC_4522B property 
storage.removable.media_available = false
11:31:31.546: volume_part_1_size_384841728 removed

The gap above indicates ejection of the disk to stop "Starting File
Manager" windows along the panel from proliferating. I was able
momentarily to see the media listed under places in the menu, though
this almost never happens.

Thought the crash report that popped up might also be of some use. I was unable 
to double-click it, "Insufficient Memory" notification. See attached though...
