You can access all 4GB because the server kernel uses PAE. PAE is also the reason the server kernel usually kernel panics on hardware more than a couple years old.
Ralf: Different models don't make them "very different," just like same model doesn't necessarily mean a single piece of hardware is the same (ugh...when manufacturers do that, it's a pain).
