To be fair to the Ubuntu folks, it is not just an Ubuntu issue. This also happens with FC 10, and I have seen reports on the Internet of it happening with SLES. At this point, my suspicion is that it has something to do with the dynamic CPU frequency / power management kernel modules not recognizing a brand new CPU or chip set.
