The Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswamy Temple is a historic Hindutemple in Thalassery, Kerala, known as the "Brass Pagoda" due to its brass sheathed roof.It is over 2,000 years old, dedicated to Lord Rama and Hanuman, and featuresintricate wood carvings, murals, and terracotta artwork. Annual Festival: The temple's annual festival begins on theday of Vishu in the month of Medam and lasts for seven days. Chakyar Koothu isperformed in the temple as a part of rituals. Mani Chakyar family traditionallyhold the right to perform on temple grounds. Legends This temple idol is believed to be consecrated and installedby the great saint Parasuraman. But some legends say that the temple was installed by SwethaMuni, the disciple of Agasthya Muni. The Sanskrit translation of Thiruvangad is'Swetharanya puram' which originated from the name of Swetha Muni. Legend has it that Agasthya Muni on his way to Kaveri riverwas confronted by two hunters, namely Neela and Swetha. The Muni cursed them,but on feeling repentant, he advised them to do penance. They obeyed his wordsand did penance at Thiruvan kattu [sacred forest], which later becameThiruvangad. This place was also called as Swetaranyam, which translates to“white forest”. It is told that the Svetharshi consecrated the Shiva temple andVishnu temple at the place where he performed penance. It is believed that theShiva established by Shwetarshi was extremely fierce, so another Shiva templewas anointed right in front of him to calm his anger. Now the temple complex has two Shiva temples facing eachother to the north and a large Shri Ram temple to the south. History This temple is more than 2000 years old and is associatedwith several historical tales and legends. Tipu Sultan's forces, in the courseof their invasion of Malabar during the mid-18th century, damaged some of itsparts. This temple has a unique place in the socio-political historyof north Kerala. The temple was a meeting point of the rulers of Kolat HiriKottayam and Kadathanadu.It was here these rulers made agreements with the British East IndiaCompany. This temple had close friendship with the rulers of Kottayam andPazhassiraja. It was the British ruler TH Babar who led the Pazhassikilling built the temple wall in 1815. The inscriptions on the temple wall is atestimony to this fact. There are two Shivatemples stand face to face with the Sree Rama temple as models of ShaivaVishnava unification of southern ' thattakam'. Architecture The copper plated Sree kovil, the sanctum sanctorum andadjoining areas are best examples of Kerala temple architectural arts alsoknown as 'vaasthu kala'. Chief deity The all-benevolent deity Sree Ramaswamy is known as Thiruvangad Perumal whois the supreme force of southern 'Thattakam' among the five deities of Kolathnadu. Devotees fervently call the deity 'Ente Thiruvangadu Perumale ' in theirdire needs. The idol is consecrated in Rama Narayana concept with smiling faceas 'Chathur Bhahu'. Sub deities Sri Hanumanstands near to the Sreerama deity. Porkali also known as Vageeswari ,the deity ofKottayam rulers is also consecrated here in Bhagavathi concept. The other deities, are Dhakshinamurthy, Ganapathi, Subramanayan and Vanasasthavu. Anjaneya Swami is all benevolent at the same he punishes alsofor wrong doings.
