RAMASAMY TEMPLES IN KERALA, TANJORE, TIRUNELVELI NAYAK ACHUTA NAYAK 1500 AD
Vijaya Nagar empiredom had Nayaks of south as a stronghold in blocking
many invasions. Nayaks were fond of Rama and Ramayanam. Hence their
influence had so many Ramasamy temples. There was no significant, direct
"Nayak Rule" in Kerala itself, but Nayaka chieftains from Keladi in
Karnataka expanded their influence into northern Kerala, defeating the
local Kolathiris kingdom and influencing the region during their height.
The major Nayak kingdoms (Thanjavur, Madurai, and Gingee) were primarily in
Tamil Nadu and coastal Karnataka, with the Keladi rulers being the main
ones to interact militarily with the northern parts of Kerala. Incidentally
THIRUVENKADU WAS CALLED SWETHARANYAM AND DEITY SWETARENYESWARAR IN
SIRGAZHI; AND IN KERALA SAME NAME WAS ADOPTED WITH THE SAME HISTORY. K
