last time I saw it, I could not see any evidence that the frame
was there at all. checking my prefs, I believe this is the
setting your asking about though I couldn't find it in the
"display preferences":

left_size=140

(got it from my .pref file)

as for reloading with target=_top that is possible, though
it is happening on 3 different browsers (Firefox 1.0, Mozilla
1.7 and IE 6.0) on 2 different computers.

thanks for the fast reply! hopefully I will see it again soon
and I'll be able to get more useful information. Last night
I left SM open all night and it was fine while I was using
it last night, though in the morning(logged in all night),
the behavior started up again. I'll leave it open all
night again tonight, and see what happens.
