The auth info (login and password) are passed to the IMAP server, which
performs the actual authentication.  So no, you don't need to recreate
accounts or home directories.  You will want to make sure you aren't
passing passwords in cleartext though; look into SSL/TLS.  If you're not
using PHP 4.3.x with SquirrelMail 1.4.x, you'll need a tool like stunnel
as well.

Performance tips are hard to give without any details about your setup
other than the fact that IMAP is ona different machine.. Software,
versions, hardware info would all need to be considered.
