Please don't forget to respond to the mailing list, not just me.

The new version is not looking for a different user.  They both run using
your web server, the user under which the web server is run is what needs
access to the data directory, so in fact, SquirrelMail has no control over
what user "is being looked for" and cannot in fact change that user.  If
the old version is still working, I suggest you compare config files side
by side and see if there is a difference in how you specified the data
directory.  Are you using the same data directory for both (you should be
- it should be outside of the htdocs tree)?
