I'm attempting to upgrade from SquirrelMail 1.0.6 to 1.4.0. I'm getting the
following error:

Error opening ../data//default_pref
Could not create initial preference file!
../data/ should be writable by user apache
Please contact your system administrator and report this error.

First off, the user "apache" doesn't even exist on my server. My old
version of SquirrelMail was installed by the host, so I'm not completely
sure it was set up. However, in looking around at the files, the data
folder for the upgraded version is set up with the same owner as the older
version. Is there a setting that I'm missing somewhere so I can tell it to
use a user other than apache?

I tried creating a user named "apache" and setting it as the owner of the
folder, but it had an error, saying "chown: changing ownership of `data':
Operation not permitted"

Also, are there supposed to be two slashes between data and default_pref, or
doesn't that make a difference? I tried using conf.pl to switch the data
directory to ../data without the trailing slash, but it automatically added one.

Thanks in advance for any help, I messed around with this all last night
while looking through the documentation and support on the SquirrelMail
website, and wasn't able to figure anything out.

Jeff
