Binary package hint: firefox
Firefox can't install extensions. It reports installation is disabled,
and provides a button to the preferences dialog.
The preferences dialog opens at 0 size so is very hard to find.
There is no option to enable installation of extensions,

failure to install the libraries they all depend on is close
to the worst POSSIBLE security problem one can imagine.
Total system failure would cause less of problem
than a half working one.

is is a bug in Firefox, plain and simple, or,
in Ubuntu packaging incorrectly disabling extensions
installation, contrary to instructions in the help.
Either way there is a bug here.

In fact I even *knew* it was something to do with
'about' .. but I tried the 'about' in the 'help'
menu and found nothing :)

/usr/lib/libgmpxx.so.4: undefined symbol: __gmp_doprnt_mpf2
This bug is only possible because of the broken dynamic linkage
strategy used by ld on Linux. which fails to resolve undefined
symbols in a shared library until load time.

This bug may be related to another one about respecting
Gnome preferences. It turns out I had two browsers
open, and later found the Preferences dialog was actually
open and hiding behind the other browser window
