I've experienced this bug as well. I've connected three different DVD
reader/writers, two Sonys and a Targa to an IBM ThinkPad X60s and a Sony
Viao via USB. None of these worked - they behaved as described above.

Connected a Sony DRX-S70U (which is a portable DVD reader/writer) to a
USB port.

It has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 chipset. I had upgraded 8.04 (Hardy)
to 8.10 (Intrepid) and rebooted. On the reboot, X would not load.

On the Sony Vaiio, the vesa driver does work. In the console (all that
works at the moment) I copied /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe over the

On a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P. with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 chipset, I
had upgraded 8.04 (Hardy) to 8.10 (Intrepid) via the Update Manager (it
offered the upgrade) and rebooted. On the reboot, X would not load.
Xorg.0.log has toward the end...
We use the xdg-utils to install our 3rd party app as part of a dpkg
install. As root, the App does NOT get registered, it does NOT appear
on the menu, and the mimetypes are NOT functioning. I have also tried
using the xdg-utils manually, without success. The corresponding files
appear in both /u
With the latest release, everything is working. As root, I was able to get my
App integrated with the xdg-utils. Here are a few safety tips:
[1] The TryExec entry MUST be in the path. Adjusting the PATH in .bashrc is
TOO LATE. I had to modify .profile (actually, we drop an init into
/etc/pr

Okay, I've updated the machine - it's current. I've plugged in the
Wacom tablet and let it sit for 5 hours. The machine did, indeed
freeze, but here's what I did:
The tablet did not function. `lsmod` shows a wacom module running, so
I'm assuming I don't have to rebuild the kernel to get this th

I can get it to work. Otherwise, I'm not sure I'd be able to find the
broken lines.
In any case, something kind of odd happened. I was looking at
Xorg.0.log and wondering why there were no Wacom entries. I reached

AFAICS you should *never* call $LAPTOP_MODE start (or stop). You should
always use $LAPTOP_MODE auto (which will then honour the config file

Encountered a black screen where the log-in screen should have been on
the first reboot after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04. The solution (found
in a forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1152992) was to
boot the recovery OS and the

I have not done any configuration in /etc/hal/fdi/policy (the wacom.fdi
file) nor any in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Perhaps doing that will make
things work.
At least the OS doesn't freeze.

I get this on an Acer Aspire 1642 WLMi as well ... Error Codes I get are
exactly the same as on Acer Aspire 1652. The error actually pops up
upon initial bootup of the kernel (before after savedefault, boot and
*Reading files needed to boot) but I guess with usplash you only see it
just before gdm
I've confirmed that this occurs in Kubuntu 8.04 with Dolphin.
Recreation:
Open dolphin.
Browse to a remote FTP location.
Attempt to create a directory. - Dolphin reports that it cannot do so.
There also appears to be intermittent failure with copying files from a
local directory over to the remot
Good .. ive been trying like crazy to register to no avail .. Hopefully

A search for ALC883 reveals a bunch of 'no sound' issues; I just got
this machine, is that chipset relatively new ?
And what is "eapd" ? (from the laptop-eapd model that seems to work.)

Upgraded from 7.10. When trying to empty deleted items, dialog appears
with "Error while deleting."
"Cannot be deleted because you do not have permissions to modify its
parent folder."
No user permissions have been changed, and this is the "Admin" account,
not a normal user
