I think the file you want to modify for options is /etc/modprobe.d/options.
Check out the modprobe manpage.
/etc/modules just lists modules to load.
Also, I don't think the hdparm command can be used for the newer
kernels. It is a shame that use of this command as a diagnostic of

For me this did indeed turn out to be the DMA problem. You can check/set your
CDROM's status using hdparm. If hdparm works for your cdrom, then you can
enable DMA permanently by editing the /etc/hdparm.conf file.

has not gone away. I was having overheating problems and had to turn off
the acpi (and apm) service in the "services" administration menu for the
fan to come back on. Otherwise it comes on when you first switch on, but

The imagej package appears to have some serious missing dependencies and
is completely broken. This is in Karmic.
install from the package, then run from command line:
$ imagej
Open other images in this ImageJ panel as follows:
