None of the files/directories you mention exist in Hardy, as far as I can tell. 
Are you sure your suggestion is relevant for Hardy?

I also don't think it has anything to do with ext3 vs vfat. The problem
appears to be further up the chain. I have a hardy laptop at home that
mounts my vfat usb drive perfectly fine, but my hardy work computer does
not, as explained above.

Bug #302679 was marked invalid today because the original poster did not
supply some info, however I think I have supplied something very similar
above. I will attach the requested output from #302679 here anyway.
