Public bug reported:
I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 8.10 x86 with the latest updates
as of today. I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver and compiz is
activated. For some reason whenever I press ctrl+c to, for example, copy
text or to kill an app in the terminal the whole X-server dies. Th
I was able to solve the problem. I had messed around with evdev in an
attempt to work around bug #54191 so this was my own fault. I'm sorry
for wasting your time. :(

My Belkin F5D5055 USB ethernet card using the "asix" driver only works
on 1000mbit networks with the current ubuntu kernel.
I forgot to mention that this is Ubuntu 8.10 i386 with all the latest
updates (kernel 2.6.27-7-generic).

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: metacity
This bug exists in both fedora 10 and ubuntu 8.10 which has Gnome 2.24.
I believe this is a problem with metacity since it doesn't happen with
compiz.
An easy way to reproduce:
1. Make sure Metacity is the window-manager (ie. disable desktop eff

No, I never got that far. It crashed right before the partitioning page.
Btw, I installed an ubuntu snapshot today and it worked so perhaps my
problem is already fixed. I'm going to try kubuntu also like last time.

Check your X log to see if evdev is being used. I haven't tried 8.10
myself yet.
Btw, fedora 10 uses evdev and has a similar problem. But the delay is
only noticable for a few minutes after starting X, then the delay
disappears. This might be a bug in evdev if ubuntu has the same problem.
Public bug reported:
A broken CD in the drive causes gdm not to start in ubuntu 8.10 during
boot. After booting when gdm is supposed to start it instead drops to a
console which repeatedly prints out read errors from the CD drive. I was
also unable to eject the CD so I had to restart the computer
This is still a problem in Jaunty with the latest updates as of today.

A hackish way to fix this would be to disable panel shadows by default
in compiz and draw fake (non-composite) shadow on the desktop wallpaper
beneath the panels. This would look right and would probably be a lot
easier than fixing compiz.

The shadows would of course be drawn corresponding to the size and
position of the panels...
But anyway, this might already have been fixed in compiz. The release
included in jaunty doesn't seem to have this problem.

Building firefox with PGO is actually quite simple. Just add
"mk_add_options PROFILE_GEN_SCRIPT='$(PYTHON)
$(MOZ_OBJDIR)/_profile/pgo/profileserver.py'" to mozconfig
(profileserver.py is a script that runs the app) and run make with the
"profiledbuild" target instead of "build".
Please enable this
I guess this will be fixed as a result of having most devices
autodetected in 8.10, unless ubuntu's scripts continues to add
"Emulate3Buttons" to xorg.conf for no reason as it does today.

I think it would be a better idea to have the panel "on the same level"
as the windows so that windows aren't covered by the panel shadow. OSX
does it this way. Check out this screenshot.

Actually both work, you can see a status message when configure
completes that tells if xcb is disabled. It builds but debconf wants to
package the xcb files intead of xlib and fails as they're missing. It
might work to use some files from libx11-1.0.3/debian/ and just change

I see no reason to enable emulate3buttons in xorg.conf. It's
autodetected anyway and autodetection also enables a timeout on move for
the 3 button emulation, eliminating this annoying problem.
Could someone take a look at this?

As a workaround, try running this in a terminal:
xset m 14/10 0
Setting the threshold to 0 enables a different kind of acceleration more
like in Windows or Mac OS X which works much better for modern mice. The
"14/10" part sets the speed, if it's to slow try with 16/10 or something
higher.

I have this problem with both the nvidia and nv driver so I don't think
this is driver related, but rather a problem with the xserver. The nv
driver uses XAA while nvidia has its own NAA so I don't think the
acceleration architecture is at fault either.

FYI I installed fedora 7 test2 in parallel with feisty. It has the same
versions of metacity and xserver but it doesn't show this problem. But
libX11 is still at version 1.0.3 in fedora while feisty has 1.1.1.
Perhaps xcb is the problem?
