Public bug reported: A broken CD in the drive causes gdm not to start in ubuntu 8.10 during boot. After booting when gdm is supposed to start it instead drops to a console which repeatedly prints out read errors from the CD drive. I was also unable to eject the CD so I had to restart the computer and remove it during the POST. Since X isn't dependent on the CD drive it should start anyway and not hang on this.
