wayne_cat provided me with a solution to get gnome-app-install working
again.
Run "gconf-editor"
Go to "apps > gnome-app-install"
Change the value of "filter_applications" from 6 to 0
It has no relation to firefox as far as I can tell. I'm getting the
error multiple times running "add/remove" from the applications menu.
Each section (accessories, graphics, internet, etc.) produces an error
as the "gnome-app-install" window's progress bar progresses.
I guess I'll just use "sudo
The acer timeline series, or at least some of the models, have this problem too
(same intel sound hardware).

On the ubuntu forum someone with a Compaq Pesario CQ60 had the bug too,
while someone else had no problem at all. Maybe it's laptops (or some
laptops) with the "82801I (ICH9 Family)" chipset.

I've come to the conclusion the whole internal microphone problem is
caused by the left channel of the microphone being used to cancel out
noises being transmitted through the chassis of the laptop. For example:

At the moment I can't reproduce the bug anymore. I used to get the
"crash detected" warning the first time (and only the first time) I
selected one of the feeds in the sidebar after starting miro. Miro
seemed to continue to run, regardless of the warning.

I disabled the pad corner buttons with :

post 11 above). Internal mic is so soft it barely captures my voice

I narrowed the cause down to one of the things I did or didn't do listed
below:
1) I made the bootable USB liveCD using unetbootin. Unetbootin doesn't
clean the USB disk (as ubuntu usb-creator does) and I had not removed
the files on the USB disk. Unetbootin does ask if I want to overwrite

I opened sound (settings) and I don't have a microphone listed under the
input tab either. However a microphone does appear when I plug in an
external mic. For some reason it doesn't switch to the built in mic (as
happens in the output tab when you plug-in / unplug your headphone).

I'd like to add, that I use the 32bit pae kernel instead of the 64bit
kernel Bilal Akhtar uses and I have an ASUS eee T101MT (most likely a
different laptop).
I also noticed that when I plug anything (mic, headphone, pc-speaker
cable, whatever) into the microphone socket, the external mic does

I believe the Acer Aspire 4810T is closely related to the already listed
Acer Aspire 1810TZ. I might be jumping to conclusions, but I'd say all
Acer Timeline laptops (of that generation) are affected.

The USB mic is probably a different problem/bug or maybe a mixer
setting. To bad the workaround didn't do it for you (might be a
different bug too). I ended up just using an external mic on my 3810T.
But my timeline's screen died almost a year ago and I'm on an asus
netbook now :)

I got the "version number does not start with digit" warning with 2
other packages, ffmpeg and qt-faststart. After looking at
/var/lib/dpkg/available I found the version numbers of the packages:
SVN-r25753-1. Not only is SVN not a digit, it also rung a bell.
