You seem to be correct in this. It's not easy for me to get access to the machines during summer holidays but a speculative wakeonlan attempt seems to have worked. lspci -vv attached shows both video cards. I guess I should have disabled the onboard card in the BIOS (I guess it'll allow that?).

As Oliver says, if you are using the usual totem setup totem-gstreamer, then gstreamer should respect the ESPEAKER env var and play to the thin clients esd (rhythmbox also uses gstreamer and it happens then). If you go to a command line and type: apt-cache policy totem-gstreamer totem-xine
