I have had acpi=off in grub/menu.lst for the past number of months.
Last week I upgraded to gutsy and so am now running 2.6.22-10-generic.
This evening, following upgrade to latest, I tried remov
booting back into the old 2.6.20 kernel from feisty (with acpi enabled)
causes the acpi_listen messages to recur. So, it appears the 2.6.22
kernel fixed the issue.

popup message saying the laptop is now working on battery and the power cab

I'm now comparing /var/log/Xorg.log and /var/log/Xorg.log.old. The second is
from the last crash and is attached. The files are moreorless identical apart
from different time stamps and VT number and an extra two lines at the bottom
of the crash file. I've attached the crash file

The xserver does restart most of the time, but it doesn't seem very
stable with a reboot. If I try to switch to a text terminal, the
console frequently locks up and acts generally strangely.

I had thought that (despite aptitude being horribly slow) the
recommended command line package tool was aptitude and not apt-get.
If this is the case it seems strange that the command line magic in
ubuntu points users to "apt-get install" instead of "aptitude install".

I gather I have the same problem. I have an AMD64 Dell Dimension C521
which boots fine with 2.6.20-13-generic . However, 2.6.20-14-generic
hangs silently on boot. I tried the ~bcollins kernel above which
doesn't fix it.
On the vanilla 2.6.20-14-generic, if I remove the vga=, quiet and spla
lspci -vvn as requested on Dell Dimension C521.

I've just the ubuntu13 version out having seen this issue up to now.
network-manager no longer seems to crash -- which is good -- though I
still can't seem to switch reliably onto my WPA network, or off it again
once that fails. I guess that's probably a wpa-supplicant issue?

I seem to hae spoken too soon.
Before going further I'll point out that I'm using a bcm4318 card and the
wireless-dev kernel tree in order to get a working driver for it. However, my
friend sees the exact same issue using an Atheros card so I don't think that's
the problem.

this is a log where I booted up first, then plugged in my wifi card once
network-manager was working. It defaults onto the WPA network (GAV). I
then try to switch it (via the nm-applet) to the unencrypted network and
after a few seconds network-manager hangs.

On a debian etch machine, we have 3 MD Raid devices. The root is a RAID
1 device atop an lvm. It got messed up and needed rescuing. Using the
Ubuntu server CD in rescue mode was great but with one minor problem.

unusable on LTSP thin clients in ubuntu/edubuntu. However, by
installing the flashsupport packages, this very old, nasty problem can
be fixed by pointing flash at the pulseaudio.

Stiil the same problem as before, a silent crash during boot by default,

You seem to be correct in this.
It's not easy for me to get access to the machines during summer
holidays but a speculative wakeonlan attempt seems to have worked.
lspci -vv attached shows both video cards. I guess I should have
disabled the onboard card in the BIOS (I guess it'll allow that?).
This no longer seems to be a problem in feisty beta, running 2.6.20 as of today
(5th April).

Over the past few days I've had time to test both an upgraded and fresh
install of edubuntu. I'm testing the sound here now by listening to ogg
vorbis and mp3 files. The server is 900MHz P3 and the thin client is a
2.8GHz P4 Shuttle SB51G (that seems backwards I know). As this is my
test setup,

created a test user logged out and logged in as that user.

then gstreamer should respect the ESPEAKER env var and play to the thin
clients esd (rhythmbox also uses gstreamer and it happens then). If you

It sounds like a bug may need to be filed against xmms for not
