Over the past few days I've had time to test both an upgraded and fresh install of edubuntu. I'm testing the sound here now by listening to ogg vorbis and mp3 files. The server is 900MHz P3 and the thin client is a 2.8GHz P4 Shuttle SB51G (that seems backwards I know). As this is my test setup, I am the only user. The network is standard 100Mbps ethernet. The server has shorewall/iptables running on it, but I've opened up full access between server and thin client (both directions tcp, udp). It's an old cluttered dome dir of mine, so it's possible some of my settings are over-riding things, but I'd hope not.
When it works, the quality seems to be reasonable. I don't think it's as good as if I used the sound card locally, so I suppose ESD is downsampling or compressing in some way. However, it's definitely listenable. I haven't noticed much if any crackle. As regards applications, I'll make a list here. == totem [passed] worked fine without any modification == rhythmbox [passed] worked fine without any modification == mpg321 [passed with modification] despite the ESPEAKER variable being set correctly, mpg321 plays through the server sound card. Strangely, this seems to be the opposite of what Rob sees. It will play through the thin client if invoked with "mpg321 -o esd <filename>" == ogg123 [passed with modification] as with mpg321, the ESPEAKER variable is ignored and playback proceeds through the server. Thin client playback works with the -d option set: "ogg123 -d esd <filename>" ==Nautilus [failed] On mouseover of audio files, nautilus uses mpg123, ogg123, etc. to play audio. For this reason, sound played through the server instead of the thin client. ==GNOME [passed] Gnome's startup sounds and closing sounds work fine. ==Denemo [failed] I know nothing about this program but thought I'd try it as it was there by default. I downloaded a free midi file and loaded it up. The music appeared but playback failed. I'm not clear why. The audio preferences say it uses timidity to play midi files and timidity is not installed. Perhaps that is the problem. http://www.midicenter.com/midi/view.php?id=5713 ==xmms [passed with modification] XMMS plays through the server by default. As Rob said, you can tell it in the output plugins to use ESD at which point it works fine. ==beep-media-player [passed with modification] BMP plays through the server by default. As with xmms, you can tell it in the output plugins to use ESD at which point it works fine. ==Quod Libet [passed] http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet/ No surprise as this is another gstreamer application. ==Listen Music Player [passed] Again, no surprise as this is a gstreamer application. This is most of the applications I could think of off the top of my head. -- Sound coming out of server instead of terminal in ltsp edubuntu https://launchpad.net/bugs/73346 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
