John Stewart is right. I guess I could also find a number of bugs like
this one that just creeped in shortly before release and then weren't
fixed later. I guess there's two choices here:
1) either fix those bugs more quickly, I understand that this requires a lot of
manpower, or
2) be a bit more

I did some more testing and found that removing all plymouth-theme-*
packages does not fully solve the problem, i.e. it still freezes. I also
noticed that the freeze can happen with or without automatic gdm login.

Just crashed again and pulseaudio is running normally. It must be sound-

Strangely, sometimes wifi just doesn't work after booting. I still

I now also frequently see the "Launching KNotify" and another hidden
"window" saying something similar to "Starting graphical UI Server"
(only a rough translation, my installation is german, but from what I

unfortunately I just experienced exactly the same problem on a freshly
installed Ubuntu 9.04. Seems to be a regression here. Could you please
have a look into this problem, because I need fcron for our backup
scripts.

I did have the same problem on my Dell M1330 running Jaunty (with nvidia
180.44), which was upgraded all the way from Gutsy. The fan was very
noisy, starting and stopping very often. GPU temperature was high
nevertheless.
