Actually just happened again: 1) I play around with the sound indicator, especially with "Sound preferences" 2) suddenly crash apport comes up but indicator is still there and now muted while music still plays 3) apport does not work: "The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes." 4) now I have the sound icon muted and music plays still 5) very interesting, now I have two volume sliders in my sound indicator: one on top and one below "Sound preferences"
