Confirmed on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty), running 2.6.28-14-generic, tried kernel noapic option but that did not help. I am running an Intel D945GSEJT Mini-ITX board with Intel Atom N270 and Realtek Gigabit controller, lspci lists it as 01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111

Installed the 2.6.30 mainline kernel and have not had issues so far, tried a single 9GB filetransfer which ran at about 60MB/s average. Did this both from and to the server using SMB. Jaunty did not boot properly with the 2.6.31 kernel on my board, so I could not test it as well, probably due to th
