So, what happened to the bug report? I just upgraded my system to newest
version (Hardy repos) and gnome-settings-daemon crashed. strace revealed
that it was because missing xscreensaver. My fix for now was to remove
screensaver plugin from /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/plugins/

Well... for me, package posted by Cedric Schieli on 2007-11-11 solved
the problem. Few days later, the package appeared in gutsy repos, so the
trackpad is working seamlessly since then.
Shortly: everything is working for me since 2007-11-11 with _no_
xorg.conf changes whatsoever :)

You might be actually right about the kernel package, as this problem
disappeared since I recompiled the kernel using stock kernel.org source (with
suspend2 and ck patches).
It might be as well usplash or initrd, as I disabled these as well.

Who's guilty? /etc/nsswitch.conf
libnss-mdns should REMOVE its entries from this file upon removal.
To manually repair the system, simply change the line starting with
"hosts:" in /etc/nsswitch.conf to read:

What about using pdnsd for that? It was designed as a DNS cache server
and works pretty efficiently.
The only thing, that DNS updates would have to modify /etc/pdnsd.conf
and put only 127.0.0.1 to /etc/resolv.conf

'Safely remove' unmounts the device, so the light on the usb-storage
device means nothing. Umount syncs all cached data to the device, so it
can be removed any time, after umount has finished.
I have never had an issue with data loss after umounting a device (while
I had a problem once, when I for

I can confirm it on a Lucid laptop. It worked before, but now the icon just
disappears and appears.
After upgrading to 2.29.2-0ubuntu9, the pulldown-menu with battery statuses
(laptop battery & wireless logitech mouse) is working. The icon still blinks
and appears in different parts of systray.
I can confirm it happening (lucid testing, lucid stable and maverick) my
USB sound device based on C-Media CM106 chipset (the device is called
"USB 7.1ch sound card", has both analog and optical I/O). Restarting PA
helps until reboot.
