I did not experience this problem as I'm using a non-HP/compaq hard
disk. Basically, this is a computer that a friend of mine made from
spare parts. But what I'm interested to know is, did you actually
experience a corruption of the partition? If not, then I guess we may
be experiencing differen

Yes, it does. I tried encoding some files with Lucid and the same
thing occurred to some files.
I am also sure that it has nothing to do with my hardware. What
happened on my old pentium 4 is still occurring on my AMD64 X2 system.

2. The problem is restricted to Totem. The "corrupted" files do play well under

Sorry for the late response. I have reason to believe that the board is
faulty.
The system threw up a blue screen of death when I tried to install
Windows XP on it. Note that this mobo is supposed to be able to run
Windows XP without a glitch.
I swapped the ram, changed the graphics card, CPU...
I've got second thoughts about this problem. It could be file contents
other than the meta tags, as some files with the avidemux meta tags do
play correctly under totem.
When AtomicParsley inserts or removes tags, it actually creates a new
file from the previous file. This process somehow remove

Update: pcmanfm will crash when doing a restoration, regardless of
whether the original files resided on a local or external disk. The
full path filenames problem occurs only when the original files were on
an external USB disk.

My sources.list file was modified by update-manager due despite an
unrealised upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 Alpha 1. I have restored the
original sources.list and I'm now fixing the problem.

The LCD screen dimmed to the lowest level everytime blank screensaver
was activated. Attempts to revert to the original brightness using
function keys were futile.

Well, actually, it didn't, which was why I found it strange. I had to
manually edit the sources.list file to get the system back to its
original state.
