I can reproduce this even with an official Intrepid Live CD simply by
restarting udev:
sudo /etc/init.d/udev restart
Restarting hal afterwards doesn't fix this for me.

Do you have any background settings other than "None (use system theme)" set in
the properties of the host panel? I had solid color with some "transparency"
enabled. When changed to "None" the applet was drawn correct immediately. I
left this setting on "None" and didn't experience any display p

Just rechecked this case and found out, that intrepid will have a
version compiled with mp3/ogg flac streaming support. Those packages are
AFAIK synched from debian. They still miss flac and vorbis-tools
packages as dependency (at least Recommends) for meta data handling
including duration retrieva
I can reproduce this on i386.
Reverting libsvn1 from backported version 1.5.1dfsg1-1ubuntu2~hardy1 to
1.4.6dfsg1-2ubuntu1 fixes this problem. But this is no option, because svn
format has changed between these versions.

With the testpackage provided by Alexander it seems to work (tested with
ipw2200 and WPA/WPA2 encrypted network). Connected right after entering SSID
and Password.
As I have no Gutsy installed (needed because of newer libc etc. dependencies) I
used a USB pendrive system. Later I reinstalled the
