If the thumbnailer hangs, this is a problem with specific files. Wasn't there a timeout of 30 seconds? Anyway, you can disable thumbnail generation per mime-type in gconf. Have a look at the comment by Sebastien: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/40874/comments/3
