With the testpackage provided by Alexander it seems to work (tested with ipw2200 and WPA/WPA2 encrypted network). Connected right after entering SSID and Password. As I have no Gutsy installed (needed because of newer libc etc. dependencies) I used a USB pendrive system. Later I reinstalled the newest Gutsy version of network-manager just to make sure it fails again.
