after updating to Kubuntu 9.04 Kernel 2.6.28-11-generic using driver radeon or
fglrx I cannot even get my X-Server up and running. After starting kdm there
was only black sceene. (Ati Mobility Radeon HD 3400 series). I can only use the
vesa-driver.
When I go back to my last Kernel 2.6.24-2
But I get errors when I try to download or upload from
KUbuntu 9.10 - 64.

Quick summary of behavior I saw on my 1420:
I've attached the status file. I worked around the bug by moving this
file to status_bad and copying status-old to status. That got apt and
update-manager working again, but it probably shouldn't have happened in
the first place or been auto fixed by update-manager.

The "vanilla" libspectre-0.2.7 doesn't show this behavior. The patch we are
takling about has been introduced in the master branch of the git repository
last June, but was reverted in September:

1) with my current Ubuntu release (12.04, kernel 3.2.0-29),
