My 2c is that this behaviour contradicts the behaviour of all other

By default, a daemon is enabled when you install it in Ubuntu, and

I have tested this bug against PHP's snapshot php5.2-200805020830. I
can reproduce it on i386 using the version listed in this comment. I
have logged a bug with PHP.

I have not attached the bug URL to the upstream bug as I do now know how

Hi Jurik,
I'm unsure why the linux kernel was added to this bug after the compiz
fix was released. What issues are you experiencing with this bug?
Thanks

I too can confirm that the hardy-proposed kernel for 32bit systems isn't
fixing the issue here also. I can see RX/TX packets on the vif1.0
interface in Dom0, however, still no reply to pings / traffic from
inside or outside DomU.

Thanks for the responses, Hirano & janevirt.
I tried Hirano's 32bit kernel and had no luck, now I'm on the hardy-
proposed kernel and still have no luck.
To answer your question, janevirt, I'm using 2.6.24-17-xen. I'm
installing via xen-tools, which seems (to my surprise) to be booting

Ok,
The good news here is that I'm an idiot!!! :)
I'm very, very new to xen and had accepted pretty much the defaults for
the xend configuration.
I was setting up my DomU to use routed traffic, however, my xend config
was configured to use bridging.
I switched from:

Not sure that really helps you much if the file isn't there for you. You
are running Hardy?

I agree, the animated foot creeps me out.
You can get rid of it by venturing into the
/usr/share/icons/gnome/24x24/animations/ directory as root and deleting
"process-idle.png" and "process-working.png" (back 'em up, if you want),
which is what I did. But, we need a new animation, to replace the o
When I visit ~/.local/share/Trash/ the files I want to delete don't
appear to be there.
rm ~/.local/share/Trash/* results in an error because there are
directories contained in that folder...

The bug doesn't actually apply to PHP the package, it only appears to
apply as when you compile the php source on Ubuntu the problem appears.
Compiling on a different system, in my case CentOS 5.1 i686, give the
correct output and the bug is not reproducible.

I get that distorted boot screen if I enter anything into xorg.conf
beyond the stub version above. The way I fixed a similar problem was by
deleting monitors.xml and regenerating xorg.conf with sudo dpkg-
reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg leaving it an empty stub.
