Hi,

> the mixer complexity is utterly baffling

Yes, you're right.

> some people actually want control over all that

One of those people is me. I just can't figure out what the designer of
the mixer controls has been smoking.

> excellent documentation at http://alsa.opensrc.org/

None of it tells me how to get stereo input on the Line in to stereo
output on the digital din on my Value edition Live!.

> The same rationale is used for the Ubuntu Dapper kernel: While
OSS/Free is not enabled by default, the modules are still compiled and
are available.

No, you're wrong.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ find /lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/ | grep emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/kernel/drivers/input/gameport/emu10k1-gp.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1-synth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.15-23-686/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1x.ko

You would've been right if you were talking about breezy, where I
configured it very simply using the sound-base package, or whatever it
was called.

(And then I had control over all the fiddly bits using the emu-tools
package, which was comprehensible)

> you probably meant to rant on is "Ubuntu doesn't enable OSS/Free
support by default"

No, I wanted to rant on "OSS not included, likelihood of having easy-to-
use sound / ever being sane drastically reduced"

Anyways, I'm off to watch some left-channel-only world cup football.
Good night.
