It seems to be solved since Ubuntu 9.04, at least on the few computers I use.
It is not closed on gnome-bugs, where it seems inactive since July 2008.

I also had a similar problem after changing my motherboard: my USB wifi dongle
was disconnected after an error message related to rhythmbox (in dmesg: "usb
