Hmm indeed... setting it to full hinting solves my problem, font are now
rendered nicely in Epiphany!
I had medium hinting set because it looked slightly better on my TFT
with some fonts... But full is fine too...

the Font-Family metadata, which has been set differently for both fonts.
fontconfig works as it should. So this is not a bug in fontconfig.

XFS on /boot works just fine. This is a Ubuntu/Debian specific issue.

No, you don't understand... GRUB can be made to work.
And XFS has clear advantages in certain situations. So xfsprogs needs to
be on the CD anyways, so having XFS on /boot will not require any extra
space.
It should be possible to use a single filesystem type on all your
devices.

Sorry. I got two bugs mixed up. Never mind my last comment.
I'm sure the issue was with the Ubuntu patchset and not the vanilla
kernel sources.
If the above patch still applies properly the problem persists. If you
look at the patch it was a minor mistaken of putting an if statement too
late.
