Just got bitten by the same bug after upgrading to ubuntu 14.10 (on a lenovo
thinkpad x240). My laptop refused to boot after the upgrade to utopic and I
suspected an issue with the uefi grub2 installation. Bootrepair does not detect
this issue and since it uses efibootmgr it can not fix it.
I am now using new xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.2-1_i386.deb package from
debian unstable. In ubuntu is older package. After this upgrade everything is
O.K. and i have no problems with detection of my graphic card or resolution.
So if you have this problem, you can try the new version of
xserve

Once or twice, I was able to copy-paste existing letters to do a chvt 1. That
terminal worked, and I was able to kill some running NetworkManager processes,
which ultimately allowed use of the keyboard to resume back in X.

And now the reason for the problem: there was no audio device. I ran
Ubuntustudio in VirtualBox and had not activated any audio output device
(or rather only the null audio driver). After switching to ALSA
everything works fine.

I can confirm espeak is broken. I've tried on at least 3 computers with
various hardware configurations - laptops, desktops, fast, slow, all

Confirming. I'm having this problem as well. I haven't had any crashes
with it, but fast switching can and does cause repeating login prompt
noises as you described. If I recall correctly, restarting the X server
fixes the problem. (Ctrl-alt-backspace or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart)

I've noticed this problem more and more recently.
Last.fm will start fine. After playing for anywhere from minutes to
hours the sound stops. The song "looks" like it is playing as the
counter goes down to 0:00, but no sound. And a new song does not load
after the counter reac
