I finally had enough and decided to give Ubuntu 7.04 a try. xfs is
stable in 7.04. And the entire system seems NOTICEABLY faster running
7.04 rather than 7.10.
I discovered the Ubuntuzilla project, thus was able to get current TBird
(and Firefox as well while I was at it) in 7.04.

I ended up reloading to Ubuntu 7.04 - OUTSTANDING RESULTS!!! The systems
run noticeably faster. Able to have xfs filesystem (other than /boot
which is ext3). I found a project for Ubuntu downloading the latest
binaries of Firefox and Thunderbird direct from Mozilla. Vista Business
in a Parallels VM
Due to bugs "133786 Bus error when running Firefox or Epiphany" and
"179238 xfs corruption - Clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and
applying latest updates" I refuse to give Ubuntu 7.10 another chance.
Due to those errors I was researching how to get testing with Hardy, and

I just had quite a fight with a clean install of 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and
applying the updates makes Firefox no longer start.
Turned out the solution was to mark the Firefox related packages to be

Oh and yes, I have all partitions as xfs other than /boot which is ext3.
Ditto for on one of my clean re-installations Gnome Terminal would not

I have retested with Xubuntu 6.10, going directly for ext3 format for
/boot. IT WORKED! So maybe it is when ext2 is first selected, or, or,
or... maybe the installer just got confused as I wiped the disk clean
and repartitioned so many times.

This also affects the Lucid alpha with all available updates, then I:

No Gtinydns account was created.
I went ahead and created the ID myself so that progress could continue.
I then edited the various files directly to make it consistent with the
other ID
I am very surprised just come across this with fully up-to-date Lucid.

I started by installing WinXP Pro SP3 to the front of the HDD in a
system, intending to add Lucid behind it.
Upon trying to create a partition in Lucid's advanced partitioner, it

Windows must be installed FIRST, else it will refuse to touch the disk.
Once I have Windows + Linux installed, am able to backup the Windows
image, then yes in production mode Linux does come first and is able to

The daily CD image 20100426.1 allowed me to do so.

Now I have added GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=1 and put back GRUB_DEFAULT=saved.
Booted to Windows XP, upon reboot it is set to the top Grub menu choice
which is Ubuntu.
Really odd that it would take Grub2 TWO entries in order to get it to

FYI johnjohn: This is due to compiz taking over as the window manager.
You may restore the desired behavior by "System \ Preferences \
Appearance \ Visual Effects tab, and setting the value to None. That

I backed up a couple of screens and was able to complete the install via
the "use the largest continuous free space" option during partitioning.
Manual partitioning was impossible. would not accept a larger /boot
partition, would not accept a 10G / partition type Ext4, nadda!

I just recreated this issue using Lucid 10.04 Alpha 2.
I did not even need to use ntfsclone to break the partition... merely
added the Windows partitions to my fstab in read/write mode, reboot into
Linux, reboot again into Windows and Windows 2000 will no longer boot.
Seems to me that read/write
I just now tested this issue against Lucid Alpha 2 and that release
works properly. Booting to Windows, rebooting, Windows is then the
default grub entry.
Thus I think this only is a bug in Ubuntu 9.10.
Hope that narrows the bug down. Now for getting it squashed! ;-)

I retested with the A3 release, and indeed the partitioning questions
are back.
I found that zsync creates a new ISO file, does not modify the existing
ISO. That is the explanation for why the zsync downloaded but did not
appear to have done anything.

The ooRexx developers figured out that this problem was due to a bug in
how the C/C++ code was compiling. Some code specifically for AIX was
ending up in the Linux builds. They are releasing an updated version,
4.0.1 soon that has this corrected. I have verified the fix on a 9.10
and 10.04 box.

Oh, and no customizations to the xorg.conf. Clean install of Lucid, run
the VB Guest Addons install, reboot, X will not start.

Working on it. My main Lucid VM session somehow lost the NIC driver. I
was thinking to pull down an updated daily in order to properly retest.
I will start the pull now of the ISO... "no fooling".

And yes, this Samba connection via the GUI interface issue is confirmed
resolved. Thank you for getting this nasty trouble taken care of.

Creating a GUI shortcut to a Sam
daemontools appears to have been autostarted in Ubuntu Server 9.10. I
did not need to start it manually in the /etc/rc.local file. I have not
yet looked into how exactly it is autostated on 9.10, but thought to
post this as a FYI for others.

Tested with a clean VM load of the Lucid alpha today - 20100312. Still
the same problem.
At boot up, the start_daemon does not fork the new pid, hangs the
script, prevents the machine from getting to the tty1 login prompt.
Kill the rxapi process, start script exits normally.

I did a recreate using the daily ISO from 20100312. Booting Win2K still
seems to hang at the same spot as previously. WinXP gets further into
the boot process with the 20100312 build of Ubuntu, Win2K does not get
that far.

Being the impatient type, I used my 20100419.1 LiveCD, added the Lucid
package of xfsprogs, and the installation went through beautifully. Now
on to other testing.

works properly. Second two will be from 10.04 where the error shows up
