Well that's the funny part - I never changed anything from the default Ubuntu settings when it comes to the notification area. What I did try when this problem had occurred several times, is to remove the notification area and then re-add it to the panel. This didn't solve the problem. Is there an

One more thing I remember (if anyone ever runs into this problem again and happens to stumble upon this report) - the problem temporarily went away when I didn't log out of Gnome properly (but used CTRL-ALT- Backspace for example). The next time I logged out of Gnome properly, the problem returned.
