As of kernel 2.6.27-3-generic, and latest hal in intrepid, with my new
MacBook Pro Penryn 4.1, I am able to adjust display brightness with fn +
F1/F2, with the mbp_nvidia_bl module loaded. This module enables the
controlling of the backlight from userspace, thereby allowing hal to

This is known, and will not be fixed in this way. The plan is for dmraid
to not need an initramfs script to launch it. Instead, the plan is for
dmraid to have a udev rule. This rule will launch dmraid when udev gets

Yes, there is a couple of ways this can be gotten into hardy. Firstly
getting alsa-plugins and alsa-lib into hardy-backports, but that doesn't
help resolve the vast majority of possible similar cases to this one
that may be out there now, and in the future.

Saïvann, try running "sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset pcsp" at a
terminal. It sounds like the previously set volume is overwriting the
defaults which it should do.
Then when you log in again, you should not hear the crackling.

Thats what my alsa-utils upload addressed, however for users who already
have settings for the device, they will have to change it manually. It
will fix things up for upgrades/fresh installs however.

The problem is that alsa has not yet been updated to 1.0.17 in the
kernel, and I am not sure when that will happen. I have asked for it to
be done, and need to prod the kernel team about it.
Once all of alsa 1.0.17 lands in intrepid, I will make pulse 0.9.11
available in a PPA, as I would like to
