Does this behavior always occur if you are away from it for about 2
hours or just sometimes or just with certain programs?
Also, are you running beryl or compiz or any games that take over the
xserver and fill up the entire screen?

Public bug reported:
I just tried to install Xubuntu fiesty herd 2. It boots up fine as a
live CD. When I try to install it, it asks my time zone and keyboard and
then gives me a screen with a broad black band across the top and bottom
of the screen. The middle of the screen has blue, white and gr
When I do Alt+F1, there is some CD disk activity, but nothing changes.
Just for fun, I also tried Alt+F7 after that and it seemed to do
absolutely nothing.
CTRL-ALT-BKSP brings me back to the liveCD desktop which seems to open
programs and work just fine.

I just tried to install Xubuntu Fiesty herd 2 via the alternate install
disk on the same computer mentioned above. The install failed.
I noticed two things of interest. First of all, my standard ide disk
seemed to be detected as SCSI and was labeled SCSI1. There is no scsi
hardware on my machine.
I just downloaded and installed herd 3. It works fine installing from
the Live CD and clicking on the icon on the desktop. I resized my
partition instead of using the whole disk.
