Just confirming this bug for Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. Very annoying. I'd like to have, e.g., "new mail" sounds from Thunderbird, but it only beeps the PC speaker although something very different is setup in the Gnome sound prefs. Only thing that helps is to disable "Alert Sounds" in the sound prefs.

Tracked down the cause to this to the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules. With the upgrade to Hardy and a new kernel my DVD drive moved from pci-:00:04.0-ide-0:0 to pci-:00:04.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 so new rules was created. Removing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-cd.rules and reboot will
