looks like your system may not have a /var/run and/or /run? Can you
attach your /etc/fstab?
Also, do you only see this issue when you ssh into the systems to
upgrade? To establish this, please can you run 'sudo telinit u' both
The problem might be related to the root filesystem being mounted ro
(although Jonathan is making dpkg remount the FS rw (see
http://wiki.debian.org/ReadonlyRoot#Make_apt-get_remount_.2F_if_needed).
That said, problem is not now reproducible even with same kernel +
package upgrade scenario.

Sorry - haven't been able to test all these kernels yet so will report

There are a few problems here...
1) autopkgtest is running the tests are root, which isn't permissible
for Upstart.
adt-run claims to be able to run tests as a non-root user, but that
functionality is currently broken (see Debian bug 686292).
2) autopkgtest uses libeatmydata with LD_PRELOAD
Looks like eatmydata is a redherring and that it might be something adt-
virt-null is doing that is causing (some of) the failures.

different networking equipment in use here at UDS?
In desperation, I shut down wlan0, rmmod'ed e1000e and reversed the
operation. This generated an Oops and didn't fix the problem:

look relevant appear. Ideally, you should boot by removing "quiet" and

'arkose --help'. Also, the options seem to have changed such that, for
example, the following no longer works although it is valid according to
arkose(1):

Is it possible your kernels are configured without ptys? Current Ubuntu
kernels specify the following pty options:
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTYS=y
CONFIG_LEGACY_PTY_COUNT=0
