I've let the system not install any updates for a couple of weeks, then
blasted them all at once (the only thing that seems to trigger this) and
neither an update of 86 or so files nor the version update to Intrepid
(1600 or so files) resulted in any such failures, so it may be fixed.

problem does not occur on my system, Compaq 8510w with Quadro FX 570M,
with the Hardy release CD. It does appear with at least one Hardy x86

install on a new, larger hard drive), and I did not have any issues.

After installing Intrepid on a Dell Inspiron 1521 with the Broadcom 4312
wireless, and updating to the current repositories (as of ~22:00 GMT),

The ecryptfs file system seems to have been incorrectly set up when I
executed "ecryptfs-setup-private". I installed using the following two
commands:
sudo apt-get install ecryptfs-utils
ecryptfs-setup-private
After logging out and back
After doing a complete reboot, and reexectution of the "rm -rf"
commands:
sudo rm -rf .ecryptfs
sudo rm -rf Private
I was able to execute
sudo apt-get -f purge ecryptfs-utils
