/etc/X11/xorg.conf is simply not present.
I moved the nvidia-current.ko aside, restarted. The X.org.0 shows that
the order of preference for the autoconfigured drivers is: 0: nvidia 1:
nouveau 2: nv 3: vesa 4: fbdev. In this case, nouveau
Leaving the xorg.conf in place, commenting out the 'Driver' line, also
allows driver fallback (nvidia to nouveau) to work correctly.
And the color depth is 24 (verified in Xorg.0.log), in both cases:
whether nvidia is used, or if it falls back to nouveau.

On the MacBookPro6.2 the keyboard controls do not work either. I have
not yet found a way to adjust the backlight, manually or otherwise.

This is odd. What does 'xmodmap -pm' say?
I'm guessing that the MBP1,1 and MBP6,2 might result in xmodmap having
different keymaps. I'll take this Mac to ODS-O as well and we can compare
keymaps.

So, this doesn't seem to be a bug in lm-sensors. If (many) MacBooks need
to have the coretemp module automatically loaded in order to enable the
fans, can someone figure out the correct package to assign this bug to?
Is this the installer's (ubiquity) responsibility?

Ubiquity crashes while in
I tried your xmodmaprc on a MBP6,2 with Natty and when I ran xmodmap in
a console (as opposed to letting Gnome run it for me on login), it
complained about removing Alt_R and Meta_R. Once I removed those,
leaving:
remove mod1 = Alt_L Meta_L
and it loaded, the keys were correctly swapped and I am
201 - 300 of 387 matches
